What is Situational/Adaptive Leadership

Adaptive leadership is the dynamic adjustment of leadership style to the level of competence and commitment of the team members being led. Blanchard and Hersey proposed four adaptive leadership style considering the Bruce Tuckman’s team formation and development theory. These four adaptive leadership style include:
Directing – takes place during team building
  • Team members may exhibit low competence but high commitment
  • Leaders behave in a highly directive and low supportive manner
Coaching – occurs during storms
  • Team members have high competence but little commitment
  • Leader has highly directive and highly supportive behaviors
Supporting – occurs during the norming phase
  • Team members have moderate to high levels of competence and varying levels of commitment
  • The leader engages in low directive and high supportive behaviors
Delegating – happens during performing phase
  • Team members have high levels of competency and high levels of commitment
  • The leader behaves in a less directive and less supportive manner
